Quilting is an artform used to hold a layer of padding material between 2 outer layers of fabric with stitches worked across the layers to hold them in place. In ancient China and Egypt quilted garments were worn for warmth and for protection in battle. Pieced or patchwork quilts were especially popular in early America, and are still popular today. Quilting is one of many artforms used by homemakers, such as lacemaking and toleware. Betsy Ross's famous flag was essentially the top layer of a patchwork quilt! Quilting!
