If a date can be placed on the origin of American football, it’s November 6,1869, when Rutgers and Princeton played the first intercollegiate match in the US. The rest in history. Consider Knute Rockne, legendary player and coach. And Jim Thorp who played a memorable game against Army and its “promising back” Ike. Ike later said “I believe football, perhaps more than any other sport, tends to instill in men the feeling that victory comes through hard work- almost slavish- work, team play, self-confidence, and an enthusiasm that amounts to dedication.” Or MacArthur; playing varsity and managing the team at West Point. John Wayne who made all-state fullback while on the varsity team. Who can forget Lombardi, the Four Horsemen, the Super Bowl, Monday Night Football, The Immaculate reception, Montana, Always, McMahon, Moon, Horning, and an endless list of heroes who push, pull, pass, run, kick and grind the pigskin down the one hundred yards to the goal. Many sports provide action, but it seems football provokes more fan participation than any other in the United States. Football!
